Biofeedback Technician Program

The Biofeedback Technician position is an excellent way for an undergraduate at UCR to gain experience in a clinical counseling setting. Biofeedback Technicians work one-on-one with Counseling Center clients who have been referred by their treating clinician for biofeedback training. Biofeedback is the use of sensors which gather information on very subtle psychophysiological processes like temperature of the skin or tension in a specific muscle. This information is used to give immediate feedback to individuals as they are learn and practice techniques which assist in recognition and then reduction of symptoms of tension in the body.

Training for the biofeedback technician takes approximately half the quarter and covers a wide range of relevant topics. A technician must understand and be able to explain the biofeedback process, to apply the biofeedback sensors to clients and explain the computer generated information on each individual client’s physiological responses. Most importantly, technicians will learn multiple relaxation and imagery strategies in order to then train clients in this area. Good listening skills are essential in order to maintain a collaborative working relationship with each individual client. Professionalism and standards of confidentiality are strongly enforced. Weekly supervision meetings are held throughout each quarter for on-going training and to discuss the various individual needs of each client.
